Semi tight tube
Fiber in a tube made of plastic (tube may be filled with gel).
Short wavelength
A commonly used term for light in the 665, 790, and 850 nm ranges.
Simplex Cable
A term sometimes used for a single fiber cable.
Single mode fiber
A fiber with a small core, only a few times the wavelength of light transmitted, that only allows one mode of light to propagate. Commonly used with laser sources for high speed, long distance links.
Splice
A connection arranged either through mechanical (mechanical splice) merging of two fiber ends or through welding (fusion splice) of two fiber ends.
Splice Tray
A container used to organize and protect spliced fibers
Splitter
An optical splitter is a passive device that splits the optical power carried by a single input fiber ino two output fibers.
Step index fiber
A multimode fiber where the index of refraction varies in steps throughout the diameter of the core.
